Maybe you are a Guitar Hero game player, but now you think you want to learn to play a real guitar? The guitar hero game is fun, but it doesn’t teach you to play the guitar. Maybe you’ve been thinking that to be able to play the guitar and perform for others would be something you’d like to do.

Learning to play an instrument takes work – you don’t really get to “play” at it until you learn the basics and practice. Then, after you’ve learned to play some chords and you’ve learned a song or two, the fun starts. I know because I learned to play the guitar when I was ten years old! I learned to play some chords that you can use for many songs. That is a good way to start – you’ll feel that you accomplished something. For example, if you learn these chords: C, G. and D, there are many, many easy guitar songs that use them.

Online videos teach you various things such as tuning the guitar and changing strings (and look up the parts of the guitar – it’s good to learn that). There are beginner lessons on videos that can teach about guitar chords.

How hard is it to learn a song?

When I learned to play guitar, I had a guitar teacher and used some guitar chord books. Now that was quite a while ago and today there are so many other options to get guitar lessons for beginners. I know that the online lessons are good. But this has not changed: a quick way to learn is to learn one song. After that, learning the second and third song will be much easier!

What kind of guitar should you have?

Lots of beginning guitar players start with an acoustic guitar and many start with what is considered a classical guitar.(See this article about guitars).  A basic difference between those two types of guitars is the kind of strings - acoustic guitars have steel strings and classical (or folk) guitars have nylon strings. Believe me, the nylon strings are much easier to start out with because they don’t hurt your fingers as much!

Either kind of guitar is great to learn to play with. Some people start with electric guitar, especially if their goal is to play electric guitar in a rock band. For some kinds of music, an acoustic guitar is better, you’ll just have to decide what kind of music you want to play and get the guitar that is best for it.

So, go get a guitar, but don’t get a really cheap one. Make sure you hear the guitar played first. If you have to get someone in the guitar store to play it, then do that. Or take a friend with you that knows about guitars. Then, start learning your first song. You will become your own guitar hero!

I’ve been messing around with a guitar and learning tabs for about 2 years, but never really actually learned how to play. Now I want my first serious guitar. I kinda want a guitar that I could take to shows and stuff once I get good enough.

I would want it to sound like Dance Gavin Dance, Taking Back Sunday on Tell All Your Friends, and From First to Last.

I’ve been looking at a Epiphone SG or LP.

There are three main types of guitar that you will encounter. They are:

- Classical Acoustic

- Acoustic

- Electric

Chances are that if you have asked someone if you can use their guitar for a while, it would probably be an old classical acoustic guitar or maybe a steel string acoustic.

These guitars are excellent to learn on because electric guitars require things like leads, amps, speakers and power. With acoustic guitars you only need a pick.

The other great thing about acoustic guitars is that you can’t turn them up loud. When you are learning it is probably better to play on a guitar that isn’t going too be loud, only loud enough so your ears can hear your errors and your good performances.

If you don’t know which types of guitar you want to play on, ask yourself, ‘what kind of music do I want to play?’

Pick a song that you like for its guitar sound. Listen to the guitar sounds and only the guitar sounds. Are they clean, soft sounds? Or are they harsh, heavy or distorted? Generally, acoustic guitars are softer and cleaner. Distorted, heavy sounds come from electric guitars that are plugged into amplifiers and effects units. Can you hear individual notes being picked or are the strings being strummed hard? The harder you play, the thicker your strings need to be. You need to know what style you want to play.

OK you have found a style of music that you like. Try and find out what the band video for that song is and watch it. There will probably be a section in there where the band is playing. In this part, look at the guitarist. Is he/she playing on an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar? What brand is it? What style? If you know the exact guitar from the video, you can ask to play on it at your local guitar shop to see if it suits you.

People play guitar for many different reasons. You need to understand what it is that you want to get out of the guitar. To discover your tastes in guitar music, listening to different styles and genres. Ask musicians at music shops about what kind of guitars different bands use, or ask them what kind of amps/effects those artists use to get that sound.

The answers don’t have to be exact because they will get you thinking about what you need to buy to achieve the sound you are after.

For more information on achieving different guitar sounds, see our articles on basic guitar effects and guitar manufacturers and guitar models.

Some people never develop a deep understanding of the acoustic guitar. That does not mean that anybody cannot have fun by just being an amateur guitar player. To learn a few chords and practice the technique of strumming can be very rewarding in spite of the fact that it does not make you a virtuoso acoustic guitar player. Speaking of virtuosos, let us take a quick look at the variety of guitar styles that come under the heading of “acoustic guitar”. There is Celtic guitar music that grew out of the folk guitar boom in the nineteen sixties. Celtic music was not originally played on the guitar, so the guitar and the alternate tunings used to play Celtic music have been grafted onto this ancient music tradition. So, as well as folk music, there is the classical guitar which is classical music played on the guitar, whether or not the piece was originally composed to be played on the guitar. Then there is Flamenco, the traditional music of the Gypsies of Spain, and the Bossa Nova music of twentieth century Brazil.

There are, of course many other more exotic forms of acoustic guitar music but as we are trying to keep things simple in this article, we will just stick to the basic acoustic guitar styles. If you want to learn how to play the acoustic guitar for free, then it is almost easier done than said. There are lots of free guitar lessons on the internet and all basic lessons apply to the acoustic guitar. You will learn about chord families, strumming techniques, picking strokes, tuning your guitar and how to change the strings. For someone who is just going to be strumming chords, it is very important to get your guitar playing posture correct. If you think that because you are only an amateur guitar player you do not need to pay attention to how you hold the guitar, think again. Your posture governs how you look and feel when you are playing.

Even though you want to learn for free, many people who have gone through the experience of teaching themselves say that taking two or three months worth of guitar lessons at the beginning is much better than struggling with the basics by yourself. I have got to  say from my own personal experience that learning chords and how they fit together to make music is a great voyage of discovery which I am glad I took. Everybody is different, I guess.

So what is available for free on the internet for acoustic guitar students? Google is the place to start. Just do a search for free guitar lessons, or free guitar lessons with the name of your favorite music inserted somewhere. Google books has all the good books on learning acoustic guitar, and many of them have extensive previews. Your next stop should be Google video or YouTube for free video guitar lessons.

As you go through the free acoustic guitar lessons on the internet, remember to keep it simple. It can be tempting to get distracted by some interesting guitar lesson video that is outside your main area of interest, but as you are still learning, it is best to stick to the basics for now.

I am getting a guitar for Christmas this year and I am really excited. I am 20 and have always been interested in playing but could never afford the instrument.

I know for sure my parents are getting me an acoustic guitar this year. I was wondering if anyone knows how long it will take me to learn how to play the guitar? Will I be able to learn it on my own or will i definitely need lessons?

I’m wanting to learn how to play guitar, just a regular guitar, but know next to nothing about it…. I’m trying to figure out whether to take a beginning classical guitar class or an intro to acoustic guitar class.
What, if there are any, are the differences between the two?
And would taking both classes be a good suggestion, or would learning both only confuse me more?

Sanjay Johari asked:

Taking care of your instrument is not only the first guitar lesson - it should become a regular habit for beginners and experts alike. Apart from ensuring longer life and consistent sound quality, by this practice you also grow a sense of respect for your guitar, an affinity and a bond with the instrument. You come to “know” your guitar better. On the other hand if you tend to neglect your guitar eventually its quality of sound will suffer. The sound quality is as important as the skill of the player.

You may like to consider using a hard shell case for transporting your guitar. The hard case holds the guitar cushioned securely in place so that the instrument does not get bumps and jerks in handling. This not only protects the body of the guitar, it also keeps the guitar tuned for a longer time.

Many people use soft or cloth “gig bag” which can be zipped up. Although such bags protect the instrument from dust, they do not provide mechanical strength to protect the guitar from possible physical damage. These bags do not even protect the tuning nuts which turn during handling and the guitar gets out of tune. To avoid such problems hard shell case of proper size should be used. The hard cases are designed to take the impact while holding the guitar safely, protecting body and neck of the guitar and keeping it in tune.

Another important accessory is a guitar stand. When you are not playing the guitar you should keep it on a guitar stand. It is not a good practice to lean the guitar against the wall. This can warp the neck of the guitar in due course. The warping will increase the distance between the strings and the fingerboard. This will in turn not only affect the quality of sound, you will need to apply more force to play the instrument. Your level of performance will be affected. To avoid such problems the guitar should be placed on a stand or a level surface. It is good idea to cover the guitar when not using it. You can keep the guitar in its hard shell case when not playing it.

The strings exert considerable force on the guitar. There is enough strength designed in the guitar to withstand this force without deforming. However, if strings are tightened too much, it will give additional strain on the guitar. To prevent over-tightening and also for ease of tuning you can have a tuning device for your guitar. With the help of this device you will be able to tune the guitar quickly and accurately.

If you are very serious about protecting your guitar, you should actually tune down your guitar (loosen the strings) when you are not playing it. You can again tune-in when you decide to play next time. I know it will be a botheration to tune the guitar so many times, but it will provide greater protection.

There are some common sense practices. You need to keep your guitar clean. While you clean your instrument, you can also develop a habit of inspecting the body of your guitar and take action quickly. For example, if any of the strings start rusting they should be replaced.

The movement of the tuning nuts should be smooth. At the earliest signs of any jerky movements, the nuts should be set right by proper maintenance.

Care and maintenance of your instrument is an important guitar lesson which should be religiously followed. The better you take care of your guitar, the better output you can expect.
